Battery UN Carton Labeling Specification: Ensuring Safe Transportation

February 1, 2025

In the international transportation of batteries, strict compliance with UN carton labeling specifications is crucial to ensure the safety of the transportation process. This press release aims to provide detailed information about these important regulations.

The UN numbers for common battery types include UN3480 for lithium-ion batteries, UN3481 for lithium-ion batteries installed in equipment, UN3090 for lithium-metal batteries, and UN3091 for lithium-metal batteries installed in equipment. These numbers must be clearly marked on the carton. The label should be printed or affixed in a prominent position on the outside of the carton, and the size of the UN number should be no less than 12mm in height.

The proper shipping name of the battery, such as "Lithium-ion Batteries" or "Lithium-metal Batteries", must be accurately marked on the carton in English. For lithium batteries, the watt-hour rating must be marked on the package if the watt-hour rating of the battery cell is greater than 20Wh or the watt-hour rating of the battery pack is greater than 100Wh.

Battery packages must be labeled with a Class 9 dangerous goods label. The label should be in the form of a square or diamond with a 45-degree angle, with a minimum size of 100mm x 100mm. The symbol should have a black background with a white border or an appropriate contrasting background. If the package is shipped by air and is only suitable for carriage on cargo aircraft, a "Cargo Aircraft Only" label must be affixed.

In addition to the above, the name, address and contact information of the battery manufacturer or shipper should be marked on the carton. The gross weight and net weight of the battery package should also be clearly marked, usually in kilograms. For lithium batteries and battery packs that meet the exemption conditions of SP188, the exemption label or relevant instructions should be marked on the package according to the regulations.

The standards for battery UN carton labeling specification have been formulated to ensure the safety of battery transportation and the protection of the environment and human life. All relevant enterprises and individuals are required to strictly abide by these regulations to jointly create a safe and reliable international transportation environment.
